About Khizi

Khizi: Azerbaijan’s Painted Mountains

Located just an hour's drive from the capital on the Northern Route, Khizi feels like another planet. It is one of the most geographically diverse regions in the country, where the arid, colorful hills of the coast transition into the lush, towering forests of the Altiaghaj mountains. It is a dream destination for photographers, hikers, and those looking for a quick escape from the city.

The Surreal Candy Cane Mountains

The primary draw of Khizi is the breathtaking landscape of the Candy Cane Mountains. These swirling hills are composed of layers of shale colored by groundwater that has altered the oxidation state of iron in the rocks. The result is a stunning palette of deep reds, bright oranges, and crisp whites that change intensity depending on the light and moisture in the air.

The Legend of Beshbarmag

Rising sharply near the Caspian shore is Beshbarmag Mountain (Five Finger Mountain). This jagged limestone peak is steeped in legend and has been a sacred place of pilgrimage and a strategic landmark for sailors and Silk Road travelers for centuries. Climbing to the top offers panoramic views of the sea and the coastal plains, providing a spiritual and physical challenge for visitors.

From Red Deserts to Green Forests

Contrast is the soul of Khizi. Beyond the colorful dry hills lies Altiaghaj National Park, a lush area known for its "six-tree" mountain passes. The park is a haven for biodiversity and offers excellent trails for mountain biking and hiking. Whether you are capturing the abstract patterns of the shale hills or breathing the cool air of the high-altitude forests, Khizi serves as a spectacular introduction to the wonders of Northern Azerbaijan.
